Day Five: Reflections

PHLS Day Five: Reflections

As we entered our last day of the PHLS program, we heard from (now) Commander Cody Thornton, a member of the USPHS. Today, which also happened to be his promotion day, Commander Thornton spoke to us about his long, winding journey to the position where he is now working in the  international sector of the USPHS. His story showed us how even when so many doors closed, resilience, focus, and following new paths can lead to careers we would never have imagined. He is now so happy with his career choices, and even though he still battles with choices he had to make, he has no regrets about where his career has led him and his family. The message he left us with was one of hope - he showed us that in the face of adversity, we are not defined by how many times we are knocked down, but by how many times we can get back up.

Dr. Alexander Vigo-Valentin, the Hispanic/Latino Health Policy Lead from the Office Of Minority Health (OMH) shared his perspective on public health relating to this group of Americans. Dr. Vigo-Valentin taught the PHLS participants about the growth of the Hispanic/Latino population within the next 30 years. On top of the growth of this particular minority population, Dr. Vigo-Valentin described how there are many minorities within minority groups. For example, he described that within the Hispanic/Latino Population, there are Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, and many other identifiable groups. He described that this is where it is often difficult to compile comprehensive information on minority groups. Dr. Vigo-Valentin said that there is a lot of information regarding the Mexican minority group however not much data collected on the other two groups. Knowing this information, he then gave students  a brief history about the OMH which was created in 1986 due to a groundbreaking report on healthcare disparities for minority populations, known as the Heckler Report. From that point, Dr. Vigo-Valentin shared with us the variety of resources and programs run through the OMH which assists minority populations establish better healthcare in their communities.

As the day came to a closing, each of the scholars gave 10 minute presentations on a topic of their choice. Each of the presentations used the Executive Core Qualities that we learned about on day one as a framework, showing how important these leadership competencies are in the field of public health. It was so intriguing to see how each individual scholar took away something unique to them and developed a passion for their topic throughout the week. The topics ranged from Resilience to Stigma-Free Communities and it was incredible to see how important each of these concepts are in public health. As we debriefed and said our closing remarks, we reflected on what a significant week these past few days had been. This week provided us with so much clarity in regards to what public health truly is and the different ways it can be integrated in our career paths. Public health is the bigger umbrella, under which all aspects of medicine and health fall. Being knowledgeable on public health is an integral portion of being an efficient future health professional and we are so thankful to have had the opportunity to learn more about this.

Bringing it all together was one lesson that every one of us took home to continually reflect on: There are many paths that can lead you to the journey you wish to pursue. With this comes the realization that change is okay. It's important to be open-minded to the opportunities that come our ways, because we'll never know where it could lead us. We've met incredible people who we see as the superheroes of Public Health, and we are inspired by how many have integrated being a physician with pursuing public health and ultimately how dedicated they are to serving populations in need. We are incredibly grateful to HOSA, ASPR and the MRC for allowing us the opportunity to be a part of such an empowering and motivating week. We are also extremely thankful to Captain Tosatto for his guidance this past week, his years of dedicated service, and his passion for HOSA-Future Health Professionals! We wish him the best on his retirement journey! Being a week that is one for the books, these past five days will be forever cherished.
